People on the move are highly vulnerable to human trafficking. They often use corrupt labor brokers to find jobs, take on significant debt, lack proper documentation, and do not understand their rights. SIMN runs education programs in Taiwan and the Philippines for migrant fishermen at risk of trafficking, while vocational training courses in Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Italy, South Africa, and elsewhere help people on the move navigate the ethical recruitment and employment process. In doing so, SIMN breaks the cycle of slavery by preventing it from happening in the first place.
