Rome, 21 February 2017 – The sixth International Forum on Migration  and Peace has started in Rome today. This Forum is jointly organized by the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN), the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Holy See’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

The focus of this mayor event is on “Integration and development: from reaction to action”. The Forum  aims at identifying migration policies and practices especially in Europe  concerning two main topics  integration of migrants and refugees in the hosting countries, and the role of migrants in fostering economic development in the countries of origin.

Context 

The European Union, as well as other areas of the world, have been experiencing an unprecedented “migrant crisis”. This has placed tremendous pressure not only upon migration policies, but also on the fundamental values and principles of human society. 

European countries and citizens, for example, have reacted to the migration crisis in different and conflicting ways, and migration has become the new political divide in Europe, influencing the outcome of electoral, political, and decision-making processes. Populist propaganda has exploited the migration crisis to the point that migrants and refugees are, by some segments of society, no longer seen as human beings in need, but are instead perceived as a generic threat to the security and identity of local communities. Consequently, they are summarily rejected.

New York, enero 25 de 2017 – La Red Internacional de Migración Scalabrini (SIMN), con más de 270 programas que sirven a migrantes de todo el mundo a través de escuelas, refugios, centros comunitarios e institutos educativos, operados por la Congregación de los Misioneros de San Carlos - Scalabrinianos, participó ante la Orden Ejecutiva de los Estados Unidos sobre Inmigración con la siguiente declaración:

“A través de nuestro trabajo vemos las injusticias contra migrantes y refugiados que buscan seguridad y una vida mejor, efectuadas por contrabandistas, agentes de la ley y traficantes de personas. Entendemos la importancia de las políticas migratorias que protegen los derechos de las personas en movilidad y alientan a las naciones a cumplir sus obligaciones con los derechos humanos, de conformidad con las leyes nacionales e internacionales.

The Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN) is a network of over 270 programs serving migrants worldwide, including schools, shelters, community centers, and educational institutes, operated by the Congregation of the Missionaries of Saint Charles, Scalabrinians.

Through our work, we see the injustices against migrants and refugees who are searching for safety and a better life, by smugglers, enforcement officials, and human traffickers.  We understand the importance of humane migration policies which protect the rights of persons on the move and seek to encourage nations to uphold their obligations to human rights, consistent with domestic and international laws.
