Criminal organizations exploit situations of poverty, inequality, violence, discrimination, forced displacement, and lack of opportunities to recruit, transport, and exploit millions of people. In recent years, the increasing use of digital platforms, social media, and online scams has created new methods of recruiting and controlling victims, making institutional and humanitarian responses even more complex.<\/p>\n From the Scalabrinian perspective, promoting safe human mobility and protecting the rights of migrants are essential tools in preventing human trafficking. The Superior General of the Missionaries of St. Charles \u2013 Scalabrinians, Fr. Leonir Mario Chiarello<\/strong>, affirms that combating this crime requires a comprehensive response based on prevention, victim protection, international cooperation, public policy advocacy, and the strengthening of justice systems. He also emphasizes that irregular migration and the lack of effective protection mechanisms significantly increase people’s vulnerability to criminal trafficking networks.<\/p>\n SIMN’s institutional position is also inspired by the principles set forth in Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas<\/em><\/strong>, which reaffirms the centrality of human dignity, solidarity, social justice, and the common good as essential foundations for addressing today’s challenges related to human mobility and the protection of the most vulnerable. The encyclical emphasizes that the way societies treat victims of trafficking, migrants, and displaced persons is a true measure of their commitment to human rights.<\/p>\n In this context, SIMN calls on governments to strengthen legal frameworks, increase resources dedicated to the prevention, protection, and prosecution of human trafficking, and reinforce effective mechanisms for regional and international cooperation. Likewise, it encourages international organizations to continue supporting institutional capacity-building and cross-border collaboration. SIMN also calls upon civil society organizations, academic institutions, faith communities, and the private sector to deepen efforts in raising awareness, accompanying victims, and strengthening protection mechanisms.<\/p>\n On the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2026<\/strong>, the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN)<\/strong> reiterates that no human being should ever be treated as a commodity and that every victim has the right to protection, recovery, accompaniment, and access to justice.
