Forum on Innovation in the Governance of International Migration: Towards an Active Participation of the Private Sector

Guadalajara, JaliscoNovember 30, 2017 – Within the framework of the global preparatory meeting for the United Nations Global Compact on Migration, to be held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, from December 4 to 6, 2017, Corporativa de Fundaciones, the International Scalabrini Migration Network (SIMN), Coparmex Jalisco, Universidad del Valle de Atemajac (UNIVA), and the government of the State of Jalisco, organized a Forum on Innovation in the Governance of International Migration: Towards an Active Participation of the Private Sector and Migrants, which took place in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on November 28, 2017, with the participation of representatives of local and national political and business actors.

The main objective of this event was to encourage the local and state governments of Jalisco and the federal government of Mexico to adopt a program of socio-labor integration of migrants, deportees and returnees based on entrepreneurship and social innovation with the active participation of entrepreneurs, including businessmen who are migrants.

Entrepreneurship and social innovation is a model of governance of migration based on the generation of effective and adequate options for labor insertion and the regularization of migrants and refugees in which governments, international organizations and civil society organizations, including the private sector and organizations that work with migrants participate in a coordinated manner. The centers for referral to employment and creation of micro-enterprises with migrants, promoted by the SIMN Network in Brazil (São Paulo and Manaus), Chile (Santiago), Colombia (Cúcuta) and Mexico (Tapachula and Tijuana), as well as South Africa (Cape Town) and Italy (Rome and Siponto) in coordination of local and national governments of these countries are effective examples that it can be replicated internationally. In Tijuana and Tapachula (Mexico), for example, there are more than two thousand people a year who manage to locate themselves in the labor market or who start a micro-enterprise, and in Santiago de Chile there are more than five thousand people per year who find a job. In this context, the Forum becomes a unique opportunity to present this innovative program as a model that Mexico proposes to the United Nations Global Compact for Migration.

As we celebrate the 130th anniversary of the foundation of our Scalabrinian Congregation, we renew our commitment to continue innovating in our programs for the welcoming, protection, promotion and integration of migrants, with the implementation of new socio-labor insertion centers, such as the one we are opening here in Guadalajara“, said the Executive Director of SIMN, Fr. Leonir Chiarello.
