Be Present in Times of Pandemic

Kaohsiung, Taiwan, July 14, 2021 – We continue to be present in the port to care for fishers. Many long distant fishing vessels have arrived in Kaohsiung. They have been sailing for around 6 months in distant seas.

In this pandemic period, it’s important to let them know the situation. We tried to explain to them the importance of protecting themselves. We distributed more health equipment for them such as face masks and hand sanitizers.

Since they can’t go around easily, we offered them some noodles, coffee and some other products from their respective countries. They were so happy to receive our gifts. Sometimes it’s important to feel at home just by testing the food of their own countries.

We used the opportunity also to update the cases that they complained about. They have asked us to assist them to return home. We have referred the cases to Taiwan Fisheries Agency. They have updated us on how the cases have been processed. We let the fishers know the recent updates.

We also tried to counsel those crews who have lost their companion. Most fishers experience the fraternity in the ship because they have struggled together in far-distant seas. When someone passed away, certainly they feel sadness.

We hope to be there with fishers to walk with them, in times of joy and in times of sadness. We know how important their contributions are for food supplies. Indeed, without fishers, many parts of the world would starve.
