Guatemala City, Guatemala – On April 18, at the National Palace of Guatemala, the President of the Republic, Jimmy Morales and the Minister of Education, Oscar Hugo López, inaugurated the National Alternative Education Program -PRONEA-.
One of the objectives of this program is the accreditation and certification of studies and labor competences carried out abroad, with emphasis on the returned migrant population.
Oscar Ramos, 33 years old, a returned migrant and guest of Casa del Migrante Guatemala, became the first student to enroll in PRONEA. He is originally from Siquinalá Escuintla and migrated, along with his grandmother, to the United States, where he lived for 20 years.
On July 2017, Oscar was deported to Guatemala and, since then, he is struggling to insert himself socially and professionally in the country. One of Oscar’s goals is to be able to finish his studies and go to the College to study Business Administration.
Casa del Migrante Guatemala has hosted Oscar, providing the services it offers (Shelter, Health Care, Legal Counseling, Labor Guidance, among others).
