Coordination Meeting with UNHCR

Lima, February 4, 2019 – A delegation of officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), headed by Representative a.i. of the UNHCR in Peru, Sabine Wähning, pay a visit to the Center for Information and Orientation to the Venezuelan Migrant at the headquarters of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, where they were received by the lawyer Jean Carlos Guerrero, in charge of legal guidance and Fr. Jairo Guidini cs, executive secretary of the Pastoral Human Mobility of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference and Regional Director of SIMN in South America.

Given the massive immigration of Venezuelan citizens to Peru, UNHCR is evaluating the implementation of orientation centers in different districts of the capital where migrants can receive the necessary information regarding their request for refuge and others related to their immigration process.

The lawyer Jean Carlos Guerrero, gave an account of the legal orientation actions related to the PTP, work coordination, accommodation assistance and other services provided in the center. For his part, Fr. Jairo pointed out the need to strengthen the work that has been done in partnership with the Scalabrini Center and the professionals who work there.

Sabine Wähning mentioned that it is important to work in partnership with the municipalities and get them to internalize and assume the actions of orientation to the population that requests refuge.
