New York, March 1, 2023 – With a deep interest in issues related to migrant issues and communities in the United States, Members of the European Parliament and staff of the European Union Delegation to the United Nations in New York met with Fr. Jairo at the Scalabrinian Provincial Office in New York.
The informal meeting took place on February 25th and the main objective was to provide information about the Scalabrinian work worldwide in favor of migrants, refugees, seafarers, and fishers worldwide. Also, there was an enriching exchange of views on current migration trends and challenges along the main migratory routes, as well as in destination countries, such as the United States.
The European Parliament delegation was integrated by Ms. Iratxe García Pérez, President of the Socialist and Democrats Group (S&D) at the European Parliament, and by Mr. Pedro Marques, S&D Vice President for Foreign Affairs. They were accompanied by Mr. Alexandre Stutzmann, Minster and Mr. Klemen Zumer, First Counsellor, both officials of the European Delegation to the United Nations.
The S&D Parliamentary Group advocates for a better migration policy – fighting its causes, pushing for coordinated search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean and demanding a fair relocation of refugees in Europe.
