New Health Services

Cúcuta, November 29, 2021 – Given the needs of the migrant population in care and health upon arrival at the Centro de Migraciones, the Scalabrinian Missionaries added a full-time nursing assistant. Guaranteeing from this year 2021 the attention at all times of the service when it is required in the Scalabrinian center.

The nursing service is a new permanent service that the Centro de Migraciones has, it is coordinated with the other services offered at the shelter to the entire population hosted. Everyday screening, temperature measurement, oxygen saturation, and the respective biosafety implements are carried out, accompanied by a talk on personal hygiene. The health professional addresses the families who arrive at the Centro de Migraciones to evaluate the state of health in which they arrive at the shelter.

This way, people diagnosed with any pathology are assisted as soon as they arrive from the auxiliary nursing service, what cannot be treated is referred with the activation of routes to state health providers or organizations with a local presence; so that they can enjoy the service like any other citizen.

In the same way, in alliance with other organizations such as Americares, health days are held once a week, providing nursing services, general medicine, and prescription delivery. These days are a support for the shelter, but not enough for the number of people housed in the shelter.

Food and Nutrition Security at the Migration Center

In 2021 we have been able to consolidate another fundamental component in the health service that is provided to migrant families at home, the presence of a nutrition professional, which was necessary to guarantee food in a timely, dignified and permanent manner during their stay at home.

The effects and consequences of migration in all its forms leave people with a high degree of malnutrition generated by the lack of food and drinking water of adequate quality. This phenomenon is seen every day with the migrants who arrive at the Centro de Migraciones.

We take anthropometric measurements to obtain a nutritional diagnosis, from there it is established -in conjunction with nursing- what is the most appropriate nutritional supplement for the people who are low weight. For overweight people, a series of recommendations are made on their diet.

The objective of nutritional assistance, apart from having an adequate nutritional plan, is to avoid food-borne diseases, make good use of biosecurity elements, and receive the necessary update for their nutritional needs.

From the nutrition component, talks are given to pregnant and lactating mothers to provide adequate nutrition for both babies and mothers. As in the kitchen area, the food handlers are trained, and continuous monitoring.
