New York, NY, May 22, 2024 – The Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN) participated in the first session of the International Dialogue on Migration (IDM), held on May 21-22, 2024. This International Dialogue on Migration session brought together States and diverse partners to explore how to create more and better opportunities for people to move in a regular and beneficial way as part of a comprehensive approach to human mobility. This included exploring policy, operational, and technical cross-sectoral solutions needed throughout the migration cycle, from pre-migration to admission, stay, exit, eventual return, and reintegration or onward migration.
This discussion took place in the context of ongoing GCM Regional Reviews and ahead of the UN Summit of the Future. Joint action to achieve real progress in migration and asylum is critical for a better future. Such action most be a key part of wider efforts to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, enable adaptation to climate change, fill labor shortages, manage demographic transitions, provide safety to those fleeing violent conflicts, and facilitate alternatives to dangerous, abusive, and exploitative irregular journeys.
« Our participation in the IDM First Session 2024 underscores our commitment to advocating for the rights and dignity of migrants. We are dedicated to collaborating with global partners to develop sustainable solutions for migration management, » stated Fr. Márcio Toniazzo, Executive Directo of SIMN.
SIMN looks forward to continuing its engagement in the International Dialogue on Migration and working towards a more inclusive and humane approach to migration.
