Representatives of the Cúcuta Scalabrinian mission and Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander (UFPS), made a joint visit to the Scalabrinian migrant shelters in Mexico

Cúcuta, Colombia, February 22, 2018 – The borders of Tapachula and Tijuana (South and North of Mexico, respectively) receive thousands of migrants daily, who yearn to arrive at the United States in search of better living conditions. In their path through Mexico, the Scalabrinian Shelters provide lodging and food, technical skills training and job creation.

The business administration program of the UFPS-Cúcuta advances since 2017, a technical support to production units in neighborhoods of Scalabrinian incidence. “Identifying successful strategies from other contexts in favor of migrants will allow us to replicate them in our region with the support of the academy“, said Nelson García Torres, Office Director of Inter-institutional and International Relations (ORII)

The Scalabrinian Migrant Shelter of Tapachula, in addition to granting a technical skill certification to the migrant, it managed to obtain a special transit permit from Mexican immigration authorities for those who obtain high qualifications and grades. Tijuana, on the other hand, is distinguished by the large presence of maquilas, and from the Migrant Shelter an employment office refers the migrants it supports.
