Deeply encouraged by the recent canonization of our founder, Saint Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, on October 9th 2022, we are determined to continue and redouble our efforts in combating the increasing violence and human rights violations of people on the move.

From January to September 2022, more  than 4,200 migrants have been reported dead or missing, accounting for the highest global mortality rate in recent years, according to the International Organization of Migration’s Missing Migrants Program (MPP). UNHCR also reported in June 2022 a sharp increase in the number of people forced to flee worldwide, reaching 103 million people, a jump of almost 15% from the end of 2021, and the largest 6-month increase in recorded history.

It is clear that the number of people on the move continues to grow despite increased mobility restrictions and detainments, forcing migrants to move through dangerous and irregular pathways. With these startling figures and the upward trend of displaced people due to natural disasters, conflict and persecution, the safety of migrants and asylum-seekers is at the forefront of the Scalabrinian Network’s GivingTuesday mission this year.

In 2022, SIMN and its Scalabrinian partners continue to support migrants, refugees, seafarers, fishers, asylum-seekers, and forcibly displaced people during and after the COVID-19 pandemic through essential assistance programs, both remote and in-person. As the need for protection and guidance of the most vulnerable becomes increasingly necessary, our response is expanding. As conditions are critical and resources are limited, support is indispensable for strengthening the comprehensive Scalabrinian programs worldwide, ensuring the safety of those we serve and preventing further deaths.

GivingTuesday was launched in 2012 as a simple idea: to create a day that encourages people to do good.  You can help save lives by joining SIMN’s GivingTuesday campaign here (https://simn-global.org/givingtuesdaysimn/).
