July 25, 2014: The Nexus Global Youth Summit on Innovative Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship was held at United Nations Headquarters in New York City from July 23rd to 26th. In attendance were international decision makers from six continents. Summit themes included film, impact investing, investing in yourself, philanthropy and human trafficking. The human trafficking portion of the conference focused on “mobilizing resources and individuals to invest in high impact solutions that address the root causes of human trafficking and combat modern slavery.”
Speaking at a session entitled “End Slavery Now: the Next Steps”, both Father Leonir Chiarello, Executive Director of the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN) and Mike Hoffman, chairman of Changing Our World, discussed various aspects of the abolitionist movement and how these could affect modern day slavery. They then worked collaboratively with the Nexus Working Group on Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery and attendees to develop ideas for future implementation that will halt trafficking and modern slavery.
