New York, July 30, 2024 – On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN) stands in solidarity with millions of victims of human trafficking worldwide. In alignment with global efforts to combat this heinous crime, SIMN reiterates its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and advocating for stronger measures against trafficking.

Human trafficking remains a grave violation of human rights, affecting men, women, and children across the globe. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), millions of people are trafficked each year for various forms of exploitation, including forced labor, sexual exploitation, and organ trafficking. As an organization dedicated to the protection and support of migrants and refugees, SIMN emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address this crisis.

In his message for the Tenth World Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking, Pope Francis highlighted the moral imperative to combat this modern form of slavery. “We know that the fight against trafficking can be won, but it is necessary to get to the root of the problem and eliminate its causes. I encourage you, then, to respond to this appeal for transformation, in memory of Saint Josephine Bakhita, who stands for all those men and women who, despite their enslavement, can still attain freedom.”

SIMN calls upon governments, civil society organizations, and individuals to take concrete actions to prevent trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute traffickers.
