The Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN) welcomes the recent report by the Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS), which presents key findings on migrant maritime workers and highlights the essential role of the Stella Maris Scalabrinian Catholic Network in serving them worldwide. The report underscores the challenges that seafarers and fishers often face, as well as the tireless commitment of Stella Maris chaplains, who accompany them through pastoral care, humanitarian assistance, and advocacy efforts.
With a presence across 15 countries, Stella Maris continues to adapt to complex and challenging environments, providing essential services to nearly 70,000 workers and their families annually despite limited resources and barriers such as restricted port access and language gaps.
This report reaffirms the importance of coordinated global efforts to protect the dignity and rights of maritime workers and strengthens SIMN’s commitment to expanding outreach, deepening partnerships, and advocating for just and humane conditions for all people on the move.
