The General Superior of the Scalabrinians Visit Cúcuta

Cúcuta, January 27, 2019 – Fr. Leonir Chiarello, who for 8 years was in charge of the International Scalabrini Migration Network (SIMN), was appointed Superior General at the end of 2018. Now based in Rome, his task is to strategically address the Global projects in favor of Migrants, these projects extend to 40 countries, it’s the result of more than 100 years of Scalabrinian work history.

Migration affects millions of people who have needs, but in times of uncertainty, good hearts provide shelter and tranquility” expressed Fr. Leonir during the Mass at the Migration Center, where he spoke with some residents, who mostly come from Venezuela and receive food, shelter, and institutional orientation.

On average, according to data from the World Organization of Migration (IOM), 2.2 million people have left Venezuela, and in Colombia, there are 1,032,000 Venezuelans. Norte de Santander and especially Cúcuta has become a destination for this population; under this context, the Scalabrinians plan the execution of new projects for 2019, with the support of strategic donors.
