Calais. Only 30 Kilometers to the Finish Line

In Calais, in the north of France, the coast looks towards England: only 30 km from the sea, but a border that for many people on the move is the hardest to cross.

Between barbed wire and controls, every night, many young people try to pass the Sleeve, hidden in trucks or on small tires, risking their lives to reach their goal.

In this place of waiting and hope, ASCS – Agenzia Scalabriniana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo runs the Effatà House, which welcomes transients who live suspended between the desire to leave and the need to stop, between fear and determination. In the house, a bench with the word Liberty written in many languages, and at the table, a dish cooked together. In recent days, Father Antonio Grasso, Director of the Development Office of SIMN Europe Africa, has been in Calais to get to know this reality closely and understand how to support the welcoming and accompanying activities that take place every day at Casa Effata.
